How the grade works
Every grade is computed from public EPA compliance data — the same records utilities are legally required to report. A city's grade starts from its state's water score (contaminant-compliance plus health-based violation rate) and is adjusted up or down for that city's own five-year violation record per water system. A grade reflects the regulatory record for your area's public water systems, not a test of the water at your specific tap — for that, a certified home test is the only sure answer.
