Why WaterMetrics exists
Your water utility mails you one report a year, written like a legal filing. Nobody publishes what tap water is actually like where you live in plain English. We do.
WaterMetrics compiles average costs for water hardness, tap water quality in all 50 states and D.C., sourced from USGS groundwater studies and EPA Safe Drinking Water Information System records, via published analyses. We turn that into rankings, state-level breakdowns and free calculators so you can see whether your bill is normal for where you live.
We are an independent data publisher — not a water utility, testing laboratory or treatment installer, and not owned by one. The site is supported by comparison partnerships: if you request quotes through our links we may earn a commission, at no cost to you. That revenue never touches the numbers; the data comes from the same public sources either way. Read the full methodology and affiliate disclosure.
WaterMetrics is part of the Metrics family of data sites, alongside ElectricMetrics. Questions or corrections: contact us — data corrections get fixed fast and credited.
