The catch: the timeline
Regulation isn't removal. Utilities were given years to test and install treatment, and compliance deadlines have since been pushed toward the end of the decade — meaning water that's legal today can still carry PFAS levels the new limits will eventually prohibit. Utilities must report PFAS testing results, so check your CCR or your utility's website for your system's numbers.
What actually removes PFAS at home
- **Reverse osmosis** (under-sink, $150–$1,300 installed) — the most consistent performer; look for NSF/ANSI 58 or P473 certification.
- **Activated carbon** — effective when certified specifically for PFAS reduction (NSF/ANSI 53 with PFOA/PFOS listed) and replaced on schedule; a neglected carbon filter stops working silently.
- **Not** boiling (concentrates PFAS if anything), and **not** standard fridge filters unless PFAS-certified.
Exposure isn't uniform — it clusters near military bases, airports, and certain industrial sites.
